Specimen Dimensions
Cube specimens with nominal dimensions of 2 in. (50 mm) were prepared using moulds conforming to ASTM C109 specifications.
Loading Rate
The specimen is loaded in compression at a rate of 200 to 400 psi/s (1.4 to 2.8 MPa/s) until failure occurs.
Curing Conditions
Specimens are stored in the moulds for 20 to 24 hours in a moist environment and then submerged in lime-saturated water until testing at 3, 7, or 28 days.

Cube Moulds
Made of non-absorptive material with internal dimensions of 2 in. (50 mm), cleaned and lightly oiled before use.
Mortar Mixing
Cement and graded standard sand mixed in a mechanical mixer; water content controlled to achieve required flow (110 ± 5%).
Specimen Preparation
Mortar is placed in two layers in moulds, each layer tamped 32 times with a tamper as specified, and surfaces struck off flush.
ASTM C109 Test Results and Interpretation
The compressive strength is calculated by dividing the maximum load carried by the specimen at failure by its loaded area. Results are reported to the nearest 10 psi or 0.1 MPa. This value indicates the cement’s ability to withstand axial compressive forces and is used for acceptance and quality control purposes.
